YOGA AND MEDITATION



Aim


To make the students physically and mentally healthier, saner to become more integrated members of the society and of the nation.



Objectives:


1. To make the students understand the significance of yoga and meditation
2. To enable the student to have good health.
3. To practice mental hygiene.
4. To possess emotional stability.
5. To integrate moral values through yoga and meditation.
6. To attain higher level of consciousness.

Regular Activities:


Orientation

Orientation on Yoga and Meditation is organised every year at the beginning of the academic year for the first UG students during the ethics classes. The students are enlightened the importance of yoga and meditation. The different kinds of yoga are and meditation methodologies are explained to the students. The benefits of yoga and meditation are also explicated during the orientation.

Yoga Training

A demonstration on performing yoga is given to the first year students during the Ethics classes. Students are trained by specialists in yoga. The method of doing meditation is explained by the mentors to the concern mentees.

Yoga Day Celebrations

Every year January 21st International Yoga day is observed. Service units like National Service Scheme, National Cadets Corps and students council jointly organise international Yoga day in a meaningful way. Government officials and Yoga masters are invited to chair the event.

Inauguration of Meditation in Action Movement (MAM)

Date: 3rdAugust, 2012

The Meditation in Action Movement acronymed as MAM was inaugurated in a day long grand program on August 30 2012 in the Lawly Hall of St. Joseph's College. Dr.KalavathyPonniraivan, M.D., the former dean of Trichy Government Medical College, the present Professor MAM and head of the department of biochemistry, Chennai Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Irungalur, presided over the function. The other chief guests were Rev. Sr. Maria Kamalam, the principal of physically handicapped school, and Rev. Sr. Josephine Ligory, the principal of the school for autistic children in Holy Cross College, Trichy. Rev.Sr. Josephine Ligory highlighted the importance of the DICELLENCE TO COCUNESS meditation in the modern workaholic world and the hyper LIVE TO LOVE LOVE TO LIVE tensed life-style. She also lauded the services that are going to emerge as the result of silent meditation. These meditational services to the downtrodden, needy people will wipe away the 'don't care' attitude and will transform the attitudes of the students. Rev. Fr. John Britto, sj, the Rector of St. Joseph's College, blessed the Meditation in Action Movement, in the presence of the Rev. Fr. Albert Muthumalai, sj. the principal of the college, and Rev. Fr. John Bosco, Sj, the secretary of the college. Rev. Fr. Francis Thamburaj.SJ, the deputy principal introduced the MAM, Meditation in Action Movement. Rev. Fr. John Students Council officials.


Inauguration of Life Line wing of MAM

Life-Line wing is a charismatic wing that combines the meditation with life-giving activities like blood donation, eye-donation and organ donation. It will actively engage in creating awareness about blood and organ donations. They inculcate the life-giving ideas in the hearts of the staff and students.
